To Kill Or Not To Kill- Muslim Scholars Discuss Apostasy At IIFA Conference

The debate was on regarding what to do about Apostates at the International Islamic Fiqh Conference in Sharjah. To behead or not to behead, that was the question at the religious freedom session on April 29, which seems an oxymoron, considering there is little, if any, freedom within Islam.

It seems Islamic scholars from all over the world were debating the hotly contested issue of apostasy, particularly in light of the fact we are living in the 21st century, not the 7th. Those from more enlightened countries believe there needs to be change:

“Religious freedom is a right that should be guaranteed to every human being. We have come here to present and discuss different viewpoints and we should do it in order to reach the right solution,” said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, Egypt’s minister of endowments.

But not surprisingly, there are those who are determined to remain in the dark ages and want to drag everyone else back to those days, as well:

“The view that Islamic scholars of the past had different views on how to punish apostates is incorrect. They only disagreed on how soon apostates should be executed; should it be done in three days, one week or few months. The waiting time is left to the discretion of the ruler,” said Muhammad Al-Nujaimi, a professor at the Higher Institute of Law in Riyadh.

It seems there will always be those who are ready, willing and able to exact their pound of flesh in the name of religion. Hard to believe we are living in the 21st century, and there are still those who believe someone deserves to have their head chopped off because they happen to abandon their religion.

Since they were unable to reach consensus, the debate will continue and

a six-member committee of scholars has been entrusted with the task of studying the issue and submitting recommendations.

How pathetic is that?!

What is really pathetic (and hypocritical) is the Islamic acceptance (and active recruiting) of converts without considering that they, themselves are taking people whom they would execute if the situation were reversed.

Even the Catholic church learned that forced conversions and penalizing apostasy was useless and even counterproductive.

Any religion that has to rely on force to maintain its members is doomed to fail in the long run.

Islam is less of a religion than an ideology of domination, perceived ”superiority” and intolerance towards others.

very true, Michael... anyone who happens to convert to another religion is an apostate. thankfully other religions don’t kill apostates.

Why can't these people live in peace or they should be provided with a country of their own where they can leave alone and kill each other....let us live in peace

Robyn,

Because Jihad is part and parcel of the religion, at least the way it is interpreted by the extremists. And those self-same extremists would not be happy with just one country... they have global domination as their goal.

These Mullahs must be knowing better. Anyways, going by the Sahih hadiths (Sahih means ’correct’, and that is why they are regarded as authentic), the direct punishment to apostates is to kill.

This is what Quran says and you are free to judge based on that.

But those who reject Faith after they accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of Faith,- never will their repentance be accepted; for they are those who have gone astray.
Verse 3:90

Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty
Verse 16:106

You will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger
58:22

O ye who believe! if any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- lowly with the believers, mighty against the rejecters, fighting in the way of Allah, and never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the grace of Allah, which He will bestow on whom He pleaseth. And Allah encompasseth all, and He knoweth all things
Verse 5:54

They ask thee concerning fighting in the Prohibited Month. Say: ”Fighting therein is a grave (offence); but graver is it in the sight of Allah to prevent access to the path of Allah, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members.” Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you Turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be companions of the Fire and will abide therein.
