Taliban Spreading To Karachi?

Looks like the Taliban have been emboldened by the so-called ‘peace treaty’, or what I like to think of as ‘appeasement agreement’, in the Swat Valley, and are now expected to take over Karachi, the financial capitol (and shipping) center of Pakistan. In a report submitted to the Sindh government, the Karachi police’s CID Special Branch believe that the Taliban

“could take the city hostage at any point.”

Whether the information is valid or not, it’s not hard to envision this eventually happening. Think about it. The police and military, tired after a few years of fighting the Taliban in Swat, essentially handed that region over to the Talibani militants. They got exactly what they wanted by putting up a fight. All they have to do is create the same situation in other regions of Pakistan, and the country is theirs. They’ve already attacked Rawalpinidi and Islamabad, and apparently have infiltrated practically every major city in Pakistan.

According to the report

Taliban fighters have “huge caches” of weapons and ammunition and could strike, possibly in a manner similar to the Mumbai attacks of November 26.

Police said that the Taliban had systematically infiltrated Karachi. The end result is that hills on the outskirts of the city, slums and small motels had become Taliban nests.

Once firmly ensconced in urban areas, the fight is going to be much easier for the Taliban and far more challenging for the police/army. We already know Islamist militants don’t give up, we see this is Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine (with Hamas) and elsewhere. Extremists could care less what innocent civilians are killed as collateral damage, as long as they achieve their ultimate goals- global domination. And in this case, the Taliban won’t give up on Pakistan until it belongs to them!

Just wait for some more time and it will spread to India as well while the ministers here will be busy campaigning to fill their vote banks…

I agree, Pakistan has created a big problem for India by making an agreement with Taliban. Peace is a foreign language to them.

Pakistan clearly has its own internal challenges, some of which are rooted in the history of its creation as a nation state. Western nations, however, have not always made the best decisions in helping to foster democratic institutions and economic development within the country.

The future certainly looks challenging and looks unlikely to be resolved by a few missiles.

Leon,

Agreed.. and I think the west, including the U.S., has often made choices based on the lesser of 2 evils... take Afghanistan...

Here's a funny thing.

The historical record shows that US development aid to Pakistan has increased dramatically when the Pakistan government has been a military dictatorship and has fallen significantly when the governments have been elected democracies.

Sean,

I wonder if that’s because they believe that they had a better chance of defeating the Taliban/Al Qaeda with a military heading the country? And perhaps they also believe that since nothing has been accomplished, (and it seems like it never will be) in that region, what’s the point of pouring money into a losing cause?

This story is based upon nothing but mare conjecture or presumptive evidence. I would say we have to come out from such conjecture and live in a real life. The reality of life is that i agree that There can be many of madrasas in Karachi and Sindh area. But keep in mind that Sindh province usually have the MQM govt. Typically MQM and other religious parties are quite extreme to each other. MQM or maybe the religious parties themselves might not leave any chance to expliot the current political situation. Hence, this presumption in reality doesn’t exists and their is no chance of Taliban taking over the city of Karachi or Sindh Province.

Also the stance of Taliban given in this article is not interpreted correctly. Although, i am no spokesman of Taliban neither pakistan govt, but i think that once govt attack through military then the chance of Colateral damage is more. Taliban are usually on defensive-mode unless they are threaten by western powers or even by Pakistan govt.

I guess, the best and only solution lies by conversating with them. If you would conversate with them inside Afghanistan or in Pakistan the end result could be into peace. If not, then Afghaan are the people that are born to fight till the end. And you can’t win the war from Afghan:

”In an interview published today (Sunday 5 October 2008 ), Brigadier Mark Carleton-Smith said ”we’re not going to win this war” and the aim was not total victory but reducing the insurgency to a low level, something which could involve talks with the Taliban.”

Although, an old interview but yet the things said remains the same even today and could be in future too.

Zaeem:

Of course, it’s conjecture.. that’s why I qualify my statement by saying whether the information in the article I read was valid or not. Opinion pieces are often based on conjecture, that’s why they are opinions. But thanks for your comment.

You say, ”Taliban are usually on defensive-mode unless they are threaten by western powers or even by Pakistan govt.”

Then can you answer me this? why has there been continued killing in Swat initiated by the Taliban, when Pakistan gave them what they wanted? That is not defense it’s aggression. And it is well known that the Taliban want to take over Pakistan.. perhaps that is your wish too, but at least please be honest enough to admit it.

Ankita and Elias,

I hope for the sake of India, that that does not happen!

The question is that if you accept that its conjecture, then how can without any solid evidence you can blame anyone or presume that Taliban are taking over the Karachi, opinion should always be based on logic or prove.

Actually you living in west can’t know the reality about Swaat untill and unless you stop taking sides and try to get the bird eye view. It was people of swat desire to get Shariah law from start. You better read the history of Swaat. And if someone comes up and giving the right of shariah to people which they desires it, i guess we should help them in their rights. People say that how can other parts of Pakistan have different law and Swat have different Law? Funny thing huh did u know that most of americans states have different laws in some states homesexual marriages are not allowed and in some it is, but yet we don’t see any chaos or writ thing there (although its a different story that if in Islaam such activity would be allowed or not). The question is if it can happen in West, then i guess the desire of peace, stability and quick justice is the demand of people of Swat, and we should open our mind to help people to get what they desire.

On the killing happening in Swat. I condemn killing of innocent people and even the reality is it was stared once govt brought Military in it. And Military only believes in force and killing (any where in the world). And you can’t enforce anything on Pashtuns and Taliban, whether you like it or not, but you gotta sit with them on table.

Allaah says in Qur’an:

And if two parties of believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them. And if one party of them doeth wrong to the other, fight ye that which doeth wrong till it return unto the ordinance of Allah; then, if it return, make peace between them justly, and act equitably. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable. (10) The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy.

(Al-qur’an 49: 9-10)

SO Allaah says to make peace in between believers. So both the Military and Taliban are muslims and now they sat down after killing of so many innocent lives, and they have got peace. Its my prayers that western slaves (our current govt) should start thinking about their own people and become brave enough to take their own decision and trust and have faith in Allaah, insha Allaah.

(This is my personal and a true muslim opinion as far as my wish goes its to see the Allaah rule upon this Earth or atleast the places muslims control :) )

and Allaah knows the best.
