What would possess a man to move his family to a western country when he abhors western values? I’m not sure when Faleh Hassan Almaleki moved to the U.S. from Iraq, but he’s apparently an American citizen. Now he’s a fugitive on the run after he plowed his Jeep into his daughter (and her roommate) in a parking lot in Peoria, Arizona because he felt she had become too westernized. Noor, his 20-year-old daughter is in critical condition, and Amal Edan Khalaf the 43-year-old mother of Noor’s boyfriend is in serious condition, though expected to live. Noor had moved in with Amal and her son after she had refused an arranged marriage.
Even though Noor was 20 and well within her rights to do as she pleased, this is a supreme example of the need to control women within that culture, and the extreme response to losing that control. Even though it is said that there is no compulsion in Islam and that people are free to choose, as Ibrahim Ramey of theMuslim American Society’s Freedom Foundation claims,
that’s not how it works. People of other faiths in Muslim majority countries are often forced to convert or are killed because they are not Muslim. All you have to do is google it for examples. And what about the Jizya? The Taliban recently told Christians in Pakistan to convert, pay Jizya or leave. There are also verses in the Qu’ran about apostasy that are interpreted by many as warranting death. All examples of compulsion and coercion.a verse in the Koran specifically states that there is no compulsion in religion, meaning that people can not be compelled or coerced into being Muslim or adhering to a certain set of rules.
Call it what you like, an attempted honor killing, a crime of passion (though plainly rooted in religion) if people hate the west so much, as the Taliban would say, they need to leave.
