Girls Can Lose Their Virginity Through Sports, According To Saudi Sheikh

There’s always something bizarre coming out of Saudi Arabia. It would be laughable if it wasn’t for the fact that these occurrences adversely affect women, in more ways than one.

So, it seems that sports should be forbidden for unmarried women because

“Football and basketball are sports that require a lot of movement and jumping,” Sheikh Abdullah al-Maneea, member of the official Supreme Council of Religious Scholars, said in a religious opinion published in Okaz newspaper Thursday.

He said such excessive movement may harm girls who are still virgins, possibly causing them to lose their virginity.

Their breathtaking ignorance never fails to amaze me. Maybe someone should inform the Sheikh, that technically speaking one loses one’s virginity through sexual intercourse, not by playing a game or two of basketball.

You couldn’t make this up if you wanted to.

It seems the men in Saudi Arabia don’t care a whit about the health and well-being of their women over there. First of all women are forced to cover themselves from head to toe, depriving them of much needed Vitamin D, which is a major factor in bone problems. And, in spite of segregated gyms, they still make it difficult for women to get much needed exercise, which is also essential for good health-

“The idea of female fitness is non-existent within our government,” said Fouziah Alouni, a prominent women’s rights campaigner.

“Depriving women of this is yet another way of marginalizing them. Give us a justifiable reason or leave woman alone. This is unbearable.”

The result has been high rates of diabetes and even bone frailty among women, which the Ministry of Health says it wants to combat.

Sure, it wants to combat this problem. How are they doing that? By closing down more gyms because they are not licensed. And why is that? Because the government doesn’t seem to want to create a licensing board for female gyms, although there is one for men. Sure, they want to eliminate these health issues as long as women remain covered up and at home. According to Madawi Al-Hassoun, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce has tried for 3 fruitless years to get the government to establish some means of licensing female gyms, to no avail.

“Some people don’t like women to go out of their homes. This is a common struggle for female businesses in Saudi,” she said.

Then again, physical education is banned in public schools in the Kingdom. So why should they approve of gyms?

While it is true that excessive movement (of a very specific sort) will cause a loss of virginity, I do not think those movements occur on the basketball court or the football pitch.

don't think so much Nkosipile, they just need a reason to restrict women in one or the other way.

NKOSIPILE,

I think people keep forgetting that virginity and being a virgin is related to sexuality. Look at any dictionary and the main definition of a virgin is someone who has not had sexual intercourse.

Even if they loose the virginity while playing......what's the big deal about it??

David,
Again, technically speaking, it would be impossible to lose one’s virginity doing anything but having sex. That’s what’s so ludicrous about the whole idea.

Ok! I'll say it this way........even if they rupture their hymen while playing, what is the big deal?

You are right David

It never ceases to amaze me with some men and the ignorance in superstitious/primitive cultures, that they still ”make a big issue out of a little bit of tissue”.
The hymen can be damaged and not just through sexual intercourse and the girls may not even know.

However simple surgery can correct this and no one need ever know after if it was genuine or not.

So girls if needs be you can have your cake and eat it too - for cultural reasons to keep everyone happy.

Lynne K,

The whole thing is just so ignorant and so wrong. I have no issue with the idea of remaining a virgin, if you choose to, but telling a woman she can lose it through sports, as if she’s having sex with a basketball is supremely idiotic.

Again as I have said.. the only way to lose one’s virginity is through sex.

This is absolutely pathetic. I am quite confident about better things to come in the rest of the Arab world, especially, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Bahrain, etc. We can expect modern democracies there (if ever people revolt), but this part of the world is bound to stay in 7th century Arabia.

Let’s ask these same Mullahs whether they believe the earth is flat like a bed or is it round!

OneHumanityPlease,

Let’s hope, because if not, the world will eventually be done for. Problem is, if places like Pakistan fall etc. that kind of fundamentalism could easily spread throughout the middle east.

Don’t worry about that. If Pakistan falls, the fundamentalism is not going to enter all of a sudden in the Middle - East. They are better equipped to handle that problem and would certainly not land up in a state like Pakistan for sure. It is this fear of Americans that makes America give billion dollars in aid to Pakistan and you never know where they are utilized.

I bet they would say its flat like a bed - because of their sick paranoid obsession with sex, for which (this time it was a man) was stoned to death last week for adultery.
I wonder if the Mullahs have heard that
with modern medical technology today they should just forget about sex altogether and use IVF.
Not to forget that micro surgery can now sew back on limbs after they have been hacked off - except heads they can’t do that yet!
I would hope like to think that there is some hope for these people desperately trapped by fear in a time warp.

”I would hope like to think that there is some hope for these people desperately trapped by fear in a time warp.”

I usually try to remain an optimist, but I don’t know about this, Lynne. There are too many who actually embrace that kind of thinking.

Now my query is, since it seems a woman should get married while still a virgin in this part of the word what about men whose virginity cannot be proved? This is so yesterday and since this virginity can never be permanent for any normal woman so what water does it hold? I hate to here some of the injustices women have to encounter in Saudi.

Rose,

Men hold all the cards in that part of the world, so it doesn’t matter whether they are or not, and they probably aren’t. And the problem is, too many women in that part of the world, are perfectly happy with their lot in life, or at least they say they are.

No I don’t think that the majority of women in these countries are happy with their lot, but are strictly silenced through fear and reprisals.
Thats why very few women can comment on anything and if they do it is carefully scrutenized.
I read an aticle through Amnesty international where a Middle eastern women made a comment on a blog and ended up in jail.
They are born into captivity - no voice, no freedom and totally controlled.
