It seems there’s a fatwa for anything and everything in the Muslim world. Some cleric gets a beef about something, and here comes a fatwa. I’ve seen some ridiculous ones over the years, and though not all fatwas are accepted by all Muslims and some are rescinded because they are too darn ridiculous, they still are issued and they still exist. Like the fatwa against yoga in Malaysia, the fatwa against life insurance, a fatwa saying Mickey Mouse should die, fatwas against jeans. Against photography, though if someone needs to travel they’d be in major trouble. I even saw a fatwa by an Egyptian cleric who said females should breastfeed their male co-workers, so they can work alone together.

“Breastfeeding an adult man five times makes it legal for the woman to sit alone with that man at a closed workplace. This way, the woman can take off her veil in front of her work-mate without being in violation of Islamic rulings,”

He did eventually happen to get fired, and rightfully so, only after much debate, which means some people must have agreed. But the list of stupid fatwas is endless.

And this latest one is pretty ridiculous. Egyptian cleric Sheikh Jamal Qutb issued a fatwa stating that if you think your neighbour’s marriage is in trouble, and you can prove it, you should go to the courts and force the neighbours to divorce, although you should try and save the marriage, before you take it to court. What? What right does someone have to interfere in a neighbour’s life, unless their is domestic abuse, and then the authorities should be called.

I wonder where they get these notions from; and don’t they have anything better to do than to sit somewhere making up fatwas for this or that?

I say we have a fatwa against fatwas! I think people know what’s best for them.
